Nestled in the heart of Aroostook County, Portage Lake was first settled in 1844 and known as Township 13, Range 6. In 1850, it became a recognized plantation, allowing residents to vote and manage local affairs. On March 24, 1909, the community officially incorporated as the Town of Portage Lake, a milestone in its history.

Today, Portage Lake is home to a close-knit community of 359 residents (as recorded in the 2020 census), who enjoy the beauty and tranquility of rural Maine living.
