Motor Vehicle Registrations
Registering your vehicle in Portage Lake is simple! Below is all the information you’ll need for various types of motor vehicle registrations.
When re-registering a vehicle (already registered in your name), remember to bring:
- Current exact mileage
- Proof of valid insurance (paper or electronic)
- Old yellow copy of your expired registration
When registering a new vehicle, you’ll need:
If purchased from a dealer:
- Current exact mileage
- Proof of valid insurance (paper or electronic)
- Dealer’s bill of sale (yellow form showing sales tax has been paid)
- Maine State Title application
If purchased from a third party:
- Current exact mileage
- Proof of valid insurance (paper or electronic)
- Bill of sale (must include sale date, VIN, and seller’s name/address)
- Original previous title signed over to the buyer and signed by both the buyer and the seller (required for vehicles 1995 or newer, and the purchaser must file for a title in their name)
Please note: New vehicle registrations cannot be processed after 4:00 PM on Tuesday–Thursday, and after 1:30 PM on Friday.
Trailer Registration: Trailers can be registered for up to two years. Camper trailers, however, are excisable due to living quarters and must be registered annually.
Re-Registration Online: You can renew a current vehicle registration online using Rapid Renewal.
Replacement Titles: Lost, stolen, or damaged title? You can apply for a duplicate title online.
Please note:
- This service is for duplicate titles only.
- New title applications cannot be submitted online.
- Duplicate title requests must be completed by the vehicle’s owner. The Town Office cannot process these requests.

Vital Records Requests
The Clerk’s Office manages vital records, including birth, marriage, and death certificates. To request a certified copy, you must provide a completed form, a valid ID, and proof of lineage if applicable. Processing may take up to two weeks.
Fees:
- Certified copy (birth, death, or marriage): $15
- Additional copies: $6 each
- Marriage intentions/license: $40
(Includes a $15 fee for a certified copy after the license is returned)
Marriage Licenses:
Please print off marriage intentions and bring them already filled out when you visit our office to get your marriage license.
Dog Licensing
Residents of Portage Lake and Nashville Plantation can register their dogs online.
Dogs must be licensed by December 31 each year. There is a grace period of one month after December 31 in which the owner can register their dog without a late fee. A mandatory late fee of $25 takes effect as of February 1; towns do not have the authority to waive this fee.
Requirements:
- Dogs must be licensed after turning 6 months old or within 10 days of adoption.
- A rabies certificate is required.
- If spayed/neutered, a certificate must also be provided.
Fees:
- Spayed/neutered dog: $6
- Unaltered dog: $11
Where does your licensing fee go? For dogs that are not “altered,” $10 goes to the Maine Animal Welfare Program, and $1 stays with the Town, in our case Portage Lake, as an agent fee. For dogs that are spayed/neutered, $3 goes to the Maine Animal Welfare Program, $2 goes to the Portage Lake or Nashville Animal Control Department (depending on which town you reside in), and $1 stays with the Town as an agent fee.
Note: Please bring your current rabies vaccination certificate when you come in to license your dog.
For more information on dog licensing, see M.R.S.A. Title 7.
