Part-Time Town Clerk

The Town of Portage Lake is seeking applications for the position of part-time Town Clerk (27 hours per week Tuesday through Friday).


Duties are defined by office policies and State Statutes, and will include, but are not limited to:

  • Care, safekeeping, disposition & preservation of public records
  • Agent for Bureau of Motor Vehicles, IF&W, & Animal Welfare
  • Elections Facilitator for municipal, state & federal elections
  • Registrar of Voters
  • Receipting registrations, property tax payments and other revenues
  • Certifying Vital Records copies
  • Customer service
  • Various weekly and monthly reporting to state agencies
  • Cashing up & reconciling the cash drawer at the end of the day
  • Budgetary & Payroll tasks as requested by the manager
  • Serving as Town Clerk for Nashville Plantation, if appointed by their Board


Applicant must have good organizational and computer skills, and working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows operating system. Applicants must also be self-motivated, dependable, work well with the public & co-workers, and have basic math skills. Prior office experience is a plus. All required training will be provided by the Town. Pay starts at $20 per hour. Benefits include paid vacation, sick time and earned paid leave time, and optional Simple IRA with town match. Extra work hours required on election days.

Part-Time Code Enforcement Officer

The Town of Portage Lake is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Code Enforcement Officer (CEO).


The CEO is responsible for:

  • Enforcing the provisions of the Portage Lake Land Use and Shore Land Zoning Ordinances
  • Conducting on-site inspections to ensure compliance
  • Serving as the Town’s Health Officer with certification
  • Secretary to the Planning Board & Board of Appeals
  • Updating the Board of Selectpersons on any issues regarding violations or major projects within town limits
  • Working closely with appropriate State Agencies


Applicants must have at least a high school diploma and a valid Maine driver’s license, be certified for Code Enforcement as required by 30-A MRSA 4451 or be willing to learn & become certified, have experience with zoning and land use regulations and be willing to learn the specific Ordinances for Portage Lake. Must have extensive knowledge of computers, email and Microsoft Office software. Applicant must also be proficient in math. Must be able to get Local Health Officer core training within one year of hire. All training & materials will be provided by the Town. This position starts at $22/hr. for up to 14 hours per week, depending on experience and certifications. Includes accrued Earned Paid Leave, stipends for Planning Board Secretary and cell phone use, and in-town mileage reimbursement.
